May 1916 
30th To sea
The Battle of Jutland

31st H.M.S. Galatea signaled at 3-30 P.M. two enemy Light Cruisers in sight, we alter course in their direction and increase speed to 20 knots.

3.50 P.M. Action Stations, everything ready for action, will we win? Will we come through alright? Whats going to happen? these are a few things we are thinking of.

4.10 H.M.S. Engadine (Seaplane ship) drops a seaplane to observe the Huns. (Returned Safe)

4.25 We - 6 Battle-Cruisers - sighted 5 large Hun ships off our Starboard Bow, (their Battle-Cruisers.) Their main, Battle Fleet close behind, (where is our Battle Fleet? getting ready at Scapa.

4.40 Order comes Port 10 enemy Battle Cruiser, stand by - The Huns fire - we fire.  What a noise. The Huns have got us, shells are falling all around us, can any one live through 'it'

5.31 H.M.S. "Queen Mary" Blows up, what a sight what was once our best firing ship is now in pieces, her after deck is floating by two men are crawling along on their hands and knees.  Paper is flying about her after deck turns over and explodes every soul onboard must be blown to pieces.  It is hardly creditable, that such a ship could blow to pieces like that.

5.35 P.M. The Huns consentrait their fire on us.  Destroyers doing well.
One of our Turrets X reports, been hit with 11" shell, out of action

5.50 Our Destroyers make an attack on the Huns, and sink their near most ship X Turret firing again. (H.M.S. Indefatigable gone, only four of use left, (things are looking shakey) against the whole Hun Fleet.  "New Zealand" last ship in line now.

5.57 The 5th Battle Squadron joins us. (4 ships) and make our line stronger, and take some of the fire off of us.  Fire, Fire, Bang, Bang, Fire.

6.20 Cease fire for the first time since 4.40.  Huns out of sight owing to Dull weather. (Range 20,000 yds whilst firing) went to Fore Top & P Turret

6.45 Open Fire again.  Battle Fleet coming at full speed.

6.55 The Battle fleet joins up.

7.7 P.M. Some armoured Cruisers and Light Cruisers pass the "Lions" bows, into the thick of the action, "Warrior" badly hit about.

7.13 German Battle ships off our Starboard Quarter, our's engaging them.

7.15 A Hun Light-Cruiser on fire off our starboard bow, flying the white flag but no hope for her.

7.17 Fired a few salvoes into her, she is still firing destroyers make an attack on her, she blows up.

7.22 We turn our fire on an enemy Battle Ship, she blows up shells are flying

7.40 Pass a ship, upside down, and sinking believe "Invincible".

7.42 Hun destroyers make an attack on us, one sinks, remainder turn back.

7.48 3rd Battle-Cruiser Squadron, "Indomitable" and "Inflexible" join up astern of us.  Firing still as heavy as ever.

8.20 P.M. Huns altering course N.N.E.

8.27 Destroyers, on both sides make an attack,  a fierce fight 3 Destroyers sunk

8.29 Check Fire - Huns out of sight.

9.32 Huns making for home at full speed under cover of night, told we were trying to cut them off come in sight of Hun ships, Fire again begining to feel it, a bit tired.

9.38 Every ship reports a shock, something like a large mine field blowing up.

10.30 Turn 16 points, to go somewhere for the night.  Expecting to meet Huns in the morning and renew the action, - all hands at action stations, all night.
During night, Admiral Beatty, sends following signal - 

[Page 6] The losses are heavy on both sides, but we hope to meet and annihilate the German Fleet in the morning.

June 1st All ready for renewing action.

3.25 A.M. Thinking of meeting the Huns again, shall we?

4.25 A Zepplin sighted, - following us. - thinks we're Huns - H.M.S. Inflexible fires, Zepplin turns and races off.

The end of a perfect night.
During the day we past hundreds, aye thousands, of dead.  Friend and Foe alike, some clinging together, others in small boats, could anyone live in such a fight?  Fish, yes there were hundreds of dead fish floating about.  We have come through the the Biggest Naval Action ever known.

June 2nd 7.30 Pass May Island, weather rough

9.55 Anchor at Rosyth, safe & sound, people cheer

10.45 The "Ferhill", a Collier along side, Coaled 1178 T

6.55 P.M. Commenced to ammunition ship.  Took in 480 12" shells

June 3rd 3.30 Finished ammunitioning ship.
